Our Story

Safer Together is a not-for-profit, member-led organisation of Operating Companies and Contract Partner Companies in the rapidly evolving Australian Energy Production Industry.

Together we seek to prevent harm to our frontline workers by simplifying, standardising and sharing.

Why We Exist

Safer Together was inaugurated in Queensland in 2013 at a time of unprecedented construction and development activity.  Western Australia and Northern Territory followed in 2018.  At this time, our industry was growing rapidly from 7 to 14 LNG trains in the space of a few years and was transitioning from Projects to Operations and preparing to manage the associated risks.

Companies realised they had common challenges, that were often unique (e.g., industry-specific legislation) or new (e.g., industry-specific technology).

There was an overlap of Operator and Contractor leaders willing to collaborate, nurturing the seeds of a more open dialogue about safety.  As the operations phase of new assets approached, recognition was growing about opportunities that would be provided by an industry-wide convergent approach to safety.

Industry also knew that a supply-chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and that safety performance had to be maintained across all service providers.

How We Are Organised

Principles for collaboration between the QLD and WA-NT Chapters of Safer Together are outlined in a Collaboration Agreement.

Our Operating Model describes our organisation structure.

  • Each Chapter of Safer Together (Qld. and WA/NT) is governed by a Board, in accordance with their Constitution. The Board is elected by member companies.
  • The Safety Leaders Group includes executive leaders from Operator and Contractor companies.  This Group oversees and steers our activities on behalf of all members.
  • Working Groups are the “engine room” of Safer Together.  They build our initiatives.  Importantly, they also support Companies right across our Industry to implement these initiatives. Champions for each Working Group are drawn from the Safety Leaders Group.

Collectively, Senior Leaders from our Member companies comprise the Industry Safety Forum (ISF).  The ISF convenes at 2 events per year.  These events ensure broad engagement with the Australian Energy Production Industry.  They provide an opportunity to: share experiences across the industry value chain; identify emerging safety challenges, perspectives and solutions; raise awareness of new and existing Safer Together initiatives; facilitate peer to peer sharing and learning about implementing Safer Together initiatives.

The initiatives built and supported by our Working Groups are categorised into 3 types – Standardisation, Major Sharing and Sharing.

Safer Together also delivers a wide range of events that provide a platform for networking, learning and sharing knowledge about safety in the oil and gas industry.
