Fatigue is an acute and / or ongoing state that leads to physical, mental and emotional exhaustion. Fatigue can not only impair a worker from functioning safely it can also have long-term health effects.
Fatigue is caused by inadequate sleep, extended wake or circadian disruption (working at times when we would normally be sleeping). It is also influenced by factors such as task and environmental conditions. It is a very real hazard that affects performance and is a prime causal factor in many incidents in our industry.
To support effective implementation of fatigue management in the workplace our WA/NT and Qld. Health Working Groups have collated information and data from member companies, key industry and government bodies and prepared tools to support Fatigue Risk Management in the workplace – and this suite of tools is now complete.
These tools now include:
- Fatigue Risk Management Guidance, a summary evaluation and comparison of available guidance material, including best practice, and
- Individual Fatigue Risk Assessment Tool, which enables a worker to self-assess their fatigue and can be used to assess fatigue risk in various scenarios.
- Fatigue Management Awareness e-Learn, an e-Learn tool designed to educate workers on the signs and impact of fatigue in the workplace and how to mitigate these risks.
- Fatigue Risk Management Education, worker education Toolbox resources designed to improve and promote fatigue risk management understanding for workers in the Australian Energy Production Industry.
These documents should be considered as guidance only, and an effort to reduce the impact on companies to undertake a review and analysis of available material and provide recommended materials and references based on company requirements, location, and work environment.
